Chilly days are back and you know what that means – dry skin season! It's like clockwork. The chilly air outside and that toasty indoor heating team up to leave our skin feeling all tight, itchy, and just plain uncomfortable. So why is Winter so rough on our skin? When the temp drops, so does the humidity, and that's bad news for our skin's moisture levels. Couple that with those icy winds and cranked-up heaters indoors, and it's like a recipe for desert-level dryness. Then there's the scalding hot showers and harsh soaps – they're basically stripping away our skin's natural oils, making matters even worse. No wonder we're all battling the dreaded dry, flaky skin blues come Wintertime.
But hey, no need to worry! We've got some natural tricks up our sleeves to keep your skin happy, hydrated and glowing, even when it's freezing outside. And they're super easy to add to your daily routine:
- Make Natural Oils You Best Friend: Natural fats like Shea Butter & Olive Oil are rich in vitamins, antioxidants and fatty acids, making them powerful allies in the battle against winter dryness. Shea butter is packed with vitamins A and E, which help to nourish and repair the skin, while olive oil contains antioxidants that protect against environmental damage. Used regularly, they provide intense hydration and help to restore the skin's natural moisture balance. You'll find them combined in all our balms, including Skin Rescue, our all-in-one powerhouse moisturiser and skin healer.
- Moisturising Magnesium Oil: This may be surprise, but this often-overlooked remedy can work wonders for dry skin. Magnesium oil helps to replenish the skin's moisture barrier, soothe irritation, and promote healing. Simply massage a few sprays of magnesium oil daily onto damp skin after showering to help lock in moisture and keep dryness at bay.
- Eat To Hydrate: Incorporating hydrating foods into your diet can also help keep your skin moisturised from the inside out. Opt for water-rich fruits and vegetables and include lots of soups, stews and curries on the menu. Enjoying plenty of Omega-3 fatty acids found in avocado, walnuts and flaxseeds can also help to maintain skin hydration and elasticity.
- Avoid Harsh Soaps & Hot Water: In the winter months, steer clear of harsh soaps that can strip your skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation. Instead, opt for natural oil-based cleansers enriched with nourishing ingredients. These gentle alternatives cleanse your skin while keeping it hydrated and protected. Also avoid taking very hot baths or showers, as the hot water will open your pores and lead to the loss of your skin's naturally hydrating oils. Hot water can exacerbate dry skin as well as eczema and psoriasis.
- Humidify Your Home: Investing in a humidifier for your home can make a world of difference for your skin during the winter months. Humidifiers add moisture to the air, helping to combat the dryness caused by indoor heating systems. Place a humidifier in your bedroom or living room to create a more comfortable environment for your skin to thrive.
- Add Water (and Tea): While it may seem obvious, staying hydrated is crucial for maintaining healthy, hydrated skin during the winter months. Drinking plenty of water (warm herbal tea is a good option too!) throughout the day, helps to keep your skin cells plump and hydrated from the inside out. Aim to drink at least eight glasses a day, and remember to drink an extra glass of water for every cup of coffee you drink, as it is dehydrating.
- Break The Chapped Lips Cycle: This is key if you suffer from dry chapped lips in the cooler months. Most mainstream lip balms are made with petroleum jelly and a bunch of other nasty ingredients, that add a synthetic barrier which may temporarily make lips feel better, but in the long run can actually dry them out. Which makes you need to apply more, which dries them out further :(. Break the habit and switch to a 100% natural lip balm which contains the nourishing oils we talked about earlier, to add not only a protective barrier, but actually nourish and repair chapped lips.
Winter may bring its fair share of challenges for our skin, but by incorporating these natural solutions into your skincare routine, you can nourish and protect your skin from the harsh effects of winter and enjoy a glowing complexion all season long. So say farewell to dry, flaky skin and say hello to a Winter filled with comfort, hydration, and glowing vitality. Your skin will thank you for it.
