Joint pain and arthritis aren’t just annoying, they can really wear you down. Whether it’s that constant dull ache in your knees or sharp pain in your wrists, it can impact everything from sleep to simply getting through the day. I know this personally. As a naturopath and someone who’s lived with muscle and joint pain myself, I’ve spent years learning how to manage it naturally, gently and consistently.
These four natural ingredients - wintergreen, peppermint, magnesium, and comfrey - have become a cornerstone of my own daily routine. They help me stay mobile, sleep better, and feel more like myself. I’ve seen the difference they make for my customers too, which is why they feature in two of our most-loved products: our Muscle Rub and Magnesium Oil Spray.
Let’s look at how these ingredients work, and why they might help you too.
1. Wintergreen – A Natural Source of Methyl Salicylate
Wintergreen is one of nature’s most powerful anti-inflammatories. It contains methyl salicylate, which is chemically similar to aspirin and works by blocking the enzyme that causes inflammation and pain. When applied topically, it increases circulation and brings warmth to the affected area, perfect for stiff joints and sore muscles.
Personally, I reach for our Muscle Rub after long days on my feet or after gardening. That warming sensation from wintergreen is like a little wave of relief that makes it easier to move again.
2. Peppermint – Cooling Relief from Menthol
Peppermint contains menthol, which activates cold receptors in the skin and creates an instant cooling effect. But it’s not just about the sensation — menthol also helps reduce the transmission of pain signals in the body by targeting TRPM8 receptors.
This means it can actually reduce how intensely your brain perceives pain. It also helps with muscle tension — which, for me, is often where joint pain begins. I’ve found that using a peppermint-rich balm at night helps ease the discomfort that tends to build up during the day.
That’s why we’ve paired peppermint with wintergreen in our Muscle Rub, so you get both the warming and cooling action in one soothing balm.
3. Magnesium – A Key Mineral for Joint and Muscle Health
Magnesium plays a crucial role in nerve signalling, muscle function, and reducing inflammation in the body. In fact, studies show that low magnesium levels are linked with chronic inflammation, and that magnesium helps regulate C-reactive protein (CRP), a marker of inflammation.
I personally discovered the benefits of topical magnesium after struggling with nighttime muscle cramps and joint stiffness. Our Magnesium Oil Spray is one of my absolute essentials, I use it on my legs, shoulders and wrists most evenings, especially after a physically demanding day.
It absorbs quickly through the skin and doesn’t leave a sticky residue, which makes it easy to add into your daily routine without fuss.
4. Comfrey – Nature’s Tissue Repairer
Comfrey is one of those herbs I fell in love with early in my studies. It’s rich in allantoin, a compound that helps stimulate the growth of new cells and support the repair of damaged tissue. Studies have found that comfrey cream can significantly reduce pain, swelling and mobility issues associated with arthritis.
I included comfrey in our Muscle Rub because it’s incredibly effective for those deep, aching joint pains, the ones that keep you up at night or stop you from enjoying your daily walk.
