Sleep Balm – How Does It Actually Work?
Ever since I was a child, I’ve struggled with sleep. Falling asleep was hard enough, but staying asleep often felt impossible. I’d wake up in the middle of the night with my mind racing and find it almost impossible to drift back off. Over the years, I tried everything: white noise machines, melatonin supplements, meditation apps and all the rest. While they sometimes helped a little, nothing ever truly fixed my sleep issues.
It wasn’t until I began studying natural medicine that I started to find answers. As part of my studies, I experimented with different herbs and remedies to understand their effects. One day, I came across a combination that worked wonders for me: chamomile, lavender, and lemon balm. It wasn’t just me - when I started sharing this blend with clients, they reported the same benefits. That’s when I knew I was onto something special.
The Science Behind the Herbs
Chamomile: This soothing herb has been used for centuries as a natural remedy for sleep and relaxation. Chamomile contains apigenin, a compound that binds to receptors in your brain to promote relaxation and reduce anxiety. Research has shown that chamomile can improve your sleep quality so you get wake up feeling more rested.
Lavender: Known for its calming scent, lavender essential oil is often used in aromatherapy to help reduce stress and anxiety. Studies have found that inhaling lavender can improve sleep quality, including in people who suffer from insomnia.
Lemon Balm: A member of the mint family, lemon balm has calming and sedative effects. Its active compounds, such as rosmarinic acid, help to increase GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) in the brain, which reduces anxiety. I personally find Lemon Balm is great for soothing anxious tummies and relieving long held stress in the body which promotes better sleep.
Why a Balm?
When I set out to create Sleep Balm, I wanted something that would be instantly relaxing and easy to use. I know a lot of people don't like taking liquid herbs and capsules and often forget to use them regularly enough to be helpful. So I designed Sleep balm to be something you will actually enjoy using, and can be easily added to your bedtime routine daily. Sleep balm combines lavender and lemon myrtle essential oils for their soothing aromatherapy benefits. Just a whiff of the balm can help you feel calmer as you prepare for bed.
But the magic doesn’t stop there. The balm also contains infused chamomile and lemon balm, which are absorbed through your skin throughout the night. This ensures their calming properties continue to work as you sleep, helping to promote deep, restorative rest. The result is a holistic approach to sleep support that works both instantly and over time.
How to Use Sleep Balm
Incorporating Sleep Balm into your bedtime routine is simple and soothing. Here’s how to get the most out of it:
-
Apply 30 Minutes Before Bed: Massage a small amount of balm onto your chest, neck, feet, and pulse points on your wrists.
-
Turn Down the Lights: Dim the lights and create a relaxing atmosphere to signal your body that it’s time to wind down.
-
Put Away Screens: Avoid the blue light from screens, which can disrupt your body’s natural sleep cycle.
-
Reapply if Needed: If you wake up during the night and find it hard to get back to sleep, simply reapply a little more balm.
For an extra boost to your bedtime routine, pair Sleep Balm with our Magnesium Spray. Magnesium is essential for relaxing muscles and calming the nervous system, so topping up your levels can make falling and staying asleep even easier.
